The EuroFIR Project – A story of success
EuroFIR (European Food Information Resource) is a five-year Network of Excellence funded by the European Commission's Research Directorate General under the "Food Quality and Safety Priority" of the Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development.
The network involves 49 partners from universities, research institutes and small-to-medium sized enterprises from 27 European countries.
The EuroFIR project officially ends on 30th June 2010.
Bioactive compounds
Bioactive plant food compounds (“plant bioactives” or “bioactive compounds”) can be defined as inherent non-nutrient constituents of food plants and edible mushrooms with anticipated health promoting/beneficial and/or toxic effects when ingested.
To ensure this information is easily accessible, relevant and usable across Europe, EuroFIR has built on previous EU work to compile a web-based integrated database (EuroFIR-BASIS) on critically assessed compositional and biological activity data for bioactive compounds in major European plant based foods.
