EuroFIR aims to develop and integrate a comprehensive, coherent and validated databank providing a single, authoritative source of food composition data for Europe.
EuroFIR is a five-year ‘Network of Excellence’ funded by the European Commission through the EU Sixth Framework Programme. The main aim of the EuroFIR project is to develop and disseminate a comprehensive, coherent and validated databank or food information resource which will provide a single, authoritative source of food composition data in Europe for nutrients and newly emerging bioactive compounds with potential health benefits.
| By operating as a Network of Excellence (NoE), EuroFIR aims to tackle the fragmentation of European research and thereby strengthen excellence in the field of food composition. Training of researchers and other key staff is indispensable to the development and sustainability of European excellence in this area. Training includes specialist workshops and training courses (including e-learning) and exchange training visits.
EuroFIR addresses the underlying issues that have hindered the development of a comprehensive databank in the past, such as the lack of permanent structures to support those involved in developing and maintaining food composition databases, and the relatively poor links between the various national database compilers, end-users of the data (e.g. the food industry, public health nutritionists and European consumers), and policy makers. EuroFIR also addresses these weaknesses, thereby accelerating the application of research results to policy and health developments, as well as developing partnerships with the private sector.
| Importantly, the development of a single, comprehensive and validated nutrient database will enable the full interpretation and exploitation of research findings from various pan-European studies that aim to investigate the relationships between dietary habits and diet-related chronic disease. | |
