1st International Advanced Course: Exposure Assessment in Nutritional Research, 30th August-3rd September 2010, Wageningen, The Netherlands

One of the main objectives of nutrition research is to provide scientific evidence to support understanding of the role of diet in human health and disease. Knowledge on the performance of dietary assessment methods and biomarkers is crucial to optimally design studies in this field. Nutrition research is often blamed for poor exposure assessment that might impair its usefulness. Therefore, studies
that evaluate reproducibility and validity of dietary assessment methods are important to allow proper inference. Consequently, researchers must get insight in the concepts and principles underlying evaluation studies. The course will address methodological aspects of exposure assessment in nutrition and related fields of biomedical research.

Seminar 'Nutritional sciences: a platform for a healthy lifestyle'
September 23, 2010 - Hotel Bedford, Brussels, Belgium

Because of the important impact on the health status of the population, there is a growing interest for nutritional sciences. In this regard, more attention should be paid to the availability of accurate scientific information and communication to ensure that consumers apply a healthy lifestyle.

Mainly six categories of nutrients, that the body needs to acquire from food, are involved: proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. Proteins supply amino acids, that are necessary to build and maintain a healthy body tissue. Fats supply energy and transport nutrients. Carbohydrates, including fibers, are the body's main source of energy and should be the major part of a total daily intake. Fibers are important for digestion and reduce the risk of colon cancer and diabetes. Vitamins and minerals are minor food substances, required by the body for regulation of metabolism and maintenance of normal growth and functioning. Finally, water helps to regulate body temperature, transports nutrients to cells, and rids the body of waste materials.

During this seminar issues about nutrition policy and claims, food composition databases, manufacturing, bioavailability of nutrients, analytical techniques and epidemiology will be presented.

Master class Public health interventions in real-life settings: the AGORA experience, 8 - 10 November 2010, Wageningen, NL

Organised by the Graduate Schools VLAG and Mansholt and AGORA Academic Collaborative Centre.

The master class is especially developed for public health researchers and professionals from practice, working in the field of health promotion, epidemiology, nutrition and health sciences, and communication sciences.

During the master class speakers from the Netherlands and abroad, working in the fields of policy, practice, and science will be invited to talk and discuss about this topic. On the first day, the emphasis will be on methods that can be used for designing and evaluating public health interventions. Both simple and complex interventions will be discussed. During the second day, the evidence-base and theory-base of interventions will be discussed. These are important conditions for admission of interventions in the quality system of the RIVM (National Institute of Public Health) Centre for Healthy Living. During the last day, the focus will be on practice. Intervention programmes conducted in real-life settings will be discussed. The master class will consist of plenary sessions, group work, and digital education modules.
