EuroFIR (European Food Information Resource) was a five-year Network of Excellence funded by the European Commission's Research Directorate General under the "Food Quality and Safety Priority" of the Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development.
The network involved 49 partners from universities, research institutes and small-to-medium sized enterprises from 27 European countries.
The EuroFIR project officially ended on 30th June 2010.
A proposal for a two years project extension has now been favourably evaluated! The project coordinator, Paul Finglas, has been invited to negotiate the final contract with the EC in July 2010. It is hoped that the project will start in early 2011 subject to a positive outcome after the negotiations.
The new project name is EuroFIR NEXUS!
The objective is to enable the investigation of the effect of food on diet and health relationships including exploitation of databases and tools for pan-European nutrition studies and networked usage, standards and code of practice, for EuroFIR‘s long-term self-sustainability.
EuroFIR AISBL
A new food information provider
One of the key achievements of the EuroFIR project is the establishment of the EuroFIR AISBL new legal entity, which forms the basis of an international, non-profit Association based in Belgium (Association Internationale Sans But Lucratif; abbreviated AISBL).

Further information
Traditional foods
To help ensure the continued existence of traditional foods and preserve their place in each country’s culture, it is important that information about their constituents and preparation methods is documented.
Ethnic foods
The main aim of EuroFIR’s ethnic foods work package was to provide new and reliable data on the composition of foods consumed by both ethnic and mainstream populations for inclusion in national food composition databases.
Bioactive compounds
To ensure that information on bioactive plant food compounds is easily accessible, relevant and usable across Europe, EuroFIR has built on previous EU work to compile a web-based integrated database (EuroFIR eBASIS) on critically assessed compositional and biological activity data for bioactive compounds in major European plant based foods.
Upcoming training
FoodComp Course 2010
International Graduate Course on the Production and Use of
Food Composition Data in Nutrition
