NOW AVAILABLE - EuroFIR’s E-learning modules:

Making food composition data comprehensible

Training of students and people involved in the field of food composition data is essential to promote the acquisition process of food composition data, and to enhance knowledge of the usage and application of food composition data.

With their diverse features, the EuroFIR e-learning modules will be designed to help users obtain a comprehensive understanding of the different aspects of food composition data. The e-learning modules are aimed at students and all those involved in food composition work.

Interactive digital learning materials offer an excellent educational tool for people with differing levels of prior knowledge. For example, it is difficult to explain nutrient analysis to users who have no chemical background, and the diverse backgrounds of the e-learning module’s target users are a challenge when teaching proper use of food composition data.

Click on the picture for an enlarged viewEuroFIR is creating a first e-learning module on ‘Nutrient Analysis for Non-chemists’ – a topic that is considered a high priority within EuroFIR. The new module will use animations and visuals to assist students in understanding nutrient analysis. Four major areas on nutrient analysis will be covered in the module, including fats and fatty acids, proteins and amino acids, carbohydrates and fibre, and minerals. The module includes interactive exercises that should motivate the students individually, and help them to digest the information presented.

After studying this e-learning module, users will be able to understand the chemical and technical principles, and the strengths and limitations, of macronutrient analyses. They will also be capable of interpreting laboratory results and evaluating their quality, as well as being able to critically communicate with laboratory technicians regarding analytical methods and results.

The e-learning modules are not designed to replace general courses on the application of food composition data but rather are designed to be an integral part of these courses. The modules will help participants to master core knowledge, giving course instructors the opportunity to focus on more advanced topics. This allows more time for discussion, which is an essential part of the learning process in this field. The modules can also be used outside of the context of a specific course, to help users fill their knowledge gaps or to refresh previously acquired knowledge.
